IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

The primary responsibility of the student is to be in class to maximize his/her opportunities for success. Excessive tardiness and absences have a direct correlation to poor student performance and are detrimental to the learning environment. Parents, students, teachers, and administrators all have a shared responsibility to ensure that a quality education is a priority. Kainai High School attendance policy is directed toward achieving that goal.

STUDENT/PARENT RESPONSIBILITES AND GUIDELINES REGARDING ATTENDANCE FOR 2017-2018

Excused Absences from Compulsory Attendance

  • Illness
  • Medical, dental, optometry, and other health services
  • Quarantine
  • Funeral
  • Court Appearance
  • Spiritual Observances
  • Death in the Family
  • Weather
  • District Transportation

STUDENT ABSENCES

  1. Students shall be permitted three (3) excused absences per quarter course.
  2. Students who accrue classroom absences in excess of the regulations stipulated in Item 1 above will be considered not to have completed the prescribed course of study and shall be excluded from the course after notification of the right to appeal. The student's transcript will be marked, "Withdrawn - Failure"; "Withdrawn – Incomplete "; and/or the student may be placed in an alternate course for the remainder of the quarter.
  3. Students may only be absent from school for legitimate and authorized reasons. Pupils who are determined by the administration to be absent from school for unauthorized reasons will be considered as truant from school and will be dealt with according section 2 above. All student absences, regardless of the nature of the absence, will be applied toward the total number of allowable absences in that student's courses, and may contribute to a loss of credit in those courses.

GENERAL ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

  1. Students who are absent from school may be required to present a parental note in order to ascertain the legitimacy of the absence. The school will make every effort to contact parents by telephone on the occasion of a student's absence.
  2. Parents and/or guardians are urged to call the Front office on the day of an absence in order to notify the school that the student will be absent. The telephone number of the Front office is 403-737-3963. If no one is available to take your call, please leave a message on the voicemail.
  3. A student who is absent for five (5) or more consecutive days due to illness must present a doctor's note or certificate which will be verified by the school counsellor and will indicate that a pupil is fit to return to school.

TARDINESS

  1. All tardiness to school resulting in absence from courses or late arrival to courses will be counted toward the total number of absences for a student in a course unless that lateness is the result of the late arrival of a school bus.
  2. 3 unexcused lates in a class will result in counting toward a full class absence.
  3. Consistent tardiness to school or to classes will result in disciplinary action – or possible removal from the course.

EARLY DISMISSAL

  1. Students requesting an early dismissal from school must present a written note from a parent to an administrator indicating the reason and the time for early dismissal. This note must be submitted no later than 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the requested dismissal.
  2. The principal or designee will recognize the following emergencies which create a legitimate need for early dismissal from school or class providing the pupil presents satisfactory proof to justify the dismissal;
    a.  Illness or injury upon verification from the school counsellor. Parents must make provisions for transportation home, as the student will not be dismissed otherwise.
    b.  Appointment with a physician or a dentist. A note with the doctor's name and office telephone number should be presented.
  3. Whenever possible, appointments requiring students to miss class time should be made outside of school hours. Students should also return to school if time permits in order to minimize the loss of class time and the accumulation of classroom absences.
  4. As is true of any absence from class, student absences from courses resulting from early dismissal will be counted as classroom absences and may contribute to the loss of credit in a course A doctor's note will not excuse an absence from class resulting from an early dismissal, however, such a note will be kept in the student's attendance file to be reviewed during an attendance appeal.
  5. A parent picking up a student should be prepared to show proof of identity to a building administrator.

MAKE-UP WORK WHEN A STUDENT IS ABSENT

  1. In the event that a student must be absent from school, all work must be made up.
  2. Students who are absent from class for reasons such as truancy, cutting or unauthorized departure from school may not be granted make-up work provisions and may receive a zero in the classes missed on the occasion of their absence.

PARENT NOTIFICATION OF STUDENT ABSENCES

  1. Parents will be notified by the classroom teacher and/or by school letter of a student's second absence from a quarter courses.
  2. At the occasion of a student's third absence in a quarter course, parents will be notified of their right to appeal the student's loss of credit in a class or classes. Parents must request an appeal within five (5) days of notification of loss of credit.
